Tributes paid to Lord Tarsem
Singh King,
former leader of Sandwell Council
Tributes
have been paid to the former leader of Sandwell Council who died of a suspected
heart attack at Euston train station on Wednesday 9th January 2013.
Labour Lord
Tarsem Singh King, who was 75, led Sandwell council from 1997 to 2001 and was
raised to the peerage as Baron King of West Bromwich in 1999.
His
political interests included local government, education and small business and
his countries of interest included Canada, India and Thailand.
He served as
a councillor from 1979 to 2007 and was Mayor of Sandwell from 2001 to 2002, he
was made an Honorary Alderman in 2008 and an Honorary Freeman in 2009.
Lord King
was awarded an appreciation award by the Sikh Community & Youth Service UK,
on 26th October 2001 for his contribution to the Sikh and wider
Communities in the UK.

Dhesy, Chairman of Sikh Community & Youth Service UK said, “Our thoughts
and prayers are with Lord Tarsem Singh King’s family at this difficult time. He
was an inspiration to us all. The Sikh Community has lost a great community
leader, and many of us have lost a great friend.

Singh Bassi, Sikh Community Leader from Birmingham said, “I was very saddened
to hear of the death of Lord Tarsem King, the former Sandwell Council leader
and an inspirational community leader."
Honorary
Alderman of Birmingham City, Gurdev Singh Manku, said: "It was sad to hear
about the death of Lord Tarsem King, I had met him on a number of occasions and
he was always very helpful and supportive for all causes he was involved
in."
Sundeep
Singh from the Sikh Community & Youth Service UK said: "Our thoughts
are with Lord Tarsem Singh King’s family."
