THE 3RD SIKH GENOCIDE
GHALLUGHARA
People
are unaware about the sustained Genocide of the Sikhs (from 1984-1998) in their
homeland, Punjab by the Indian government. Over One Million Sikhs have been
tortured, raped, murdered and made to disappear by the Indian regime, by mostly
upper caste Hindus, in positions of power, who have (under the pretext of
curbing terrorism) used the state propaganda machinery to malign the Sikh
globally - Goebbels style, so that a tiny (barely 2% of India’s population)
minority’s voice for liberty and justice could be silenced forever.
Facts about India’s
attack on the Darbar Sahib:
• June 1984 - Indira
Gandhi, Prime Minister of India in a pre-meditated plan, attacked the Darbar
Sahib (The Golden Temple) and the Akal Takht (the most important historical
Gurdwara and seat of temporal power) with tanks and gunships.
• As part of this
Operation Bluestar, in an all-out war against the Sikhs, thousands of innocent
Sikh men, women and children are murdered, many in cold blood. The holy premises
were desecrated, vandalized, and historical records and artifacts
destroyed/stolen.
•
In the
ensuing weeks, as part of Operation Woodrose, tens of thousands of Sikh youth
were abducted, most never to be heard from again.
Few Facts of the start
of the 3rd Ghallugahara:
•
Sikhs
were systematically killed in over 100 cities, across 18 states in India, Oct
31 – Nov 4, 1984.
•
Over
30,000 killed throughout India and typically burnt alive; November 1 – 7, 1984.
•
Even the
then President of India, Zail Singh, was attacked.
•
Sikh
women in the thousands, ranging from 3-80 years were gang raped by goons,
policemen, civil administrators, neighbors and even friends.
•
Over 300
Sikh soldiers in uniform were killed in Ranchi, Bihar by Hindu soldiers;
November 1 – 5, 1984.
•
In
Jharkhand at the Bokhara Steel plant 120 Sikhs while working were forcibly
thrown into the burning furnace.
•
Babies
were roasted alive on gas and kerosene stoves.
•
40 Sikh
families taking refuge inside a police station were all roasted alive in
Agartala, Tripura on Nov 2, 1984.
•
12 Sikhs
were hung from the ceiling at the railway platform in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh
on Nov 1, 1984.
•
A Hindu,
Dr.Gupta, was directing a lynch mob in Trilokpuri, New Delhi and harvesting
eyes from the murdered Sikhs on Nov 1, 1984.
•
Sikh
women were kidnapped in the hundreds and kept for weeks and repeatedly gang
raped by government instigated Hindu captors in major cities across India.
• In Kanpur, Uttar
Pradesh, Hindus tortured and murdered 67 Sikh men by making them sit on very
sharp metal poles while the onlookers jeered and danced.
•
The
Indian government actually set up a charade of ten commissions between,
1984-2005, yet not a single politician, police officer, or civilian has been
was sentenced to date.
• In fact, all the lead
perpetrators – (all Hindus) have been rewarded and promoted to even more senior
positions in the central government. The collusion of the government with the
criminals is complete.
Facts of the sustained
(1984 – 1998) 3rd Ghallughara:
• Starting in mid-1984
over 700,000 Indian troops were moved into Punjab and they remained there for
over a decade.
• The then Prime Minister,
Indira Gandhi, masterminded ‘Operation Shanti’ to completely exterminate the
Sikhs in India (exactly as Hitler planned and did with the Jews). The plan was
to start a war with Pakistan and under the ruse of aerial bombardment, decimate
the entire Sikh population (especially in the countryside). The master plan was
scaled down when she was assassinated just before it was to be implemented.
• The central authorities
rounded up any visible Sikh 14 - 45 year old men and took them away to
detention centers with impunity, using the POTO and TADA emergency laws, which
violate international standards and criminal jurisprudence (despite India’s
agreement to adhere to these protocols).
•
Baatcheet
– Indian Army Bulletin; Serial No 153, June 1984; an official Indian Army
monthly bulletin informing all troops that they have to alert the authorities
about any and all formally initiated (amritdhari) Sikhs. This circular gave
even the lowest level soldier the free reign to arrest and kill innocent Sikhs
with impunity.
•
Just
like Hitler, who coerced and coopted Jewish military officers to kill their
Faith brothers, similarly the Indian regime found pliable senior Sikh officers
to annihilate their Faith brothers for the sake of a promotion and medal to
match.
• According to Inderjit
Singh Jaijee (a highly respected Human Rights activist, the President of the
Dalit Front and Movement Against State Repression), who has spent the last 30
years collecting data on the Sikh Genocide, – over 250,000 mostly young Sikh
men have disappeared.
• According to Dr.Sangat
Singh, (Director of India’s Strategic Studies at the Ministry of Defense, a member
of the Joint Intelligence Committee in India’s Foreign Office which dealt in
propaganda and disinformation), “the genocidal policy initiated by then Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi had had its impact during the decade 1981 – 1991,
culminating in the Indian government exterminating anywhere from 1 - 1.2
Million young Sikh men in 15 – 35 age
• The state agencies paid
over 41,000 cash bounties totaling over $100 Million to police officers and
other security personnel to kill Sikhs.
• The systematic slaughter
was sustained for over 15 years. Sanctioned by the state, the security forces
created a fear so intense, the state has been able to escape accountability,
even to this date.
• Jaswant Singh Khalra, a
human rights activist, unearthed records of over 25,000 Sikhs illegally
cremated in just one district alone. The Indian Police tortured, then chopped
him up and threw his remains in a canal in 1998.
• Not a single
international human rights organization has ever been allowed to investigate
the mass killing fields of Punjab until today – 2014.
Mockery of Justice:
• For the last ten years
several diaspora Sikhs have tried to gather information on the Sikhs killed by
the Indian government in the Genocide, but have been repeatedly threatened with
dire consequences if they continue down that path. Invariably, no one from the
outside can collect unbiased data because of institutionalized racism against
the Sikhs.
• Further, any semblance
of officially accepting the pogroms against the Sikhs as a ‘Genocide’ would put
India on trial and jeopardize India’s economic ties to several western nations
including the US.
• Since India has stoutly
denied that there has ever been a Sikh Genocide, there should be no fear if the
UNHRC sends an investigative team to verify the facts for themselves.
Solution to move
forward:
Thirty
years having passed, and still, India has no appetite to even acknowledge the
Ghallughara (Sikh Genocide), let alone serve justice to the Sikhs. But Sikhs
everywhere will not rest until the truth shines forth. There should be a UN-led
‘Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ set up immediately, manned by unbiased
independent outsiders to investigate (akin to the ones setup in South Africa
and Bosnia) in order to start on the path to peace and closure. We appeal to
all those who value human rights, the cornerstone of our American democracy, to
help the Sikhs in their quest for truth and justice.

numbers in this pamphlet are best estimates based on various sources, since
records were deliberately destroyed and major human rights organizations are
still banned from entering Punjab.
